If you have been anywhere near a gym in the last few years, you have probably heard the word HYROX mentioned. Maybe a training partner is already completely obsessed with it. Maybe there are already HYROX-specific classes in your area. Or perhaps you saw the race patches on someone's gym bag and wondered what all the fuss was about. This is everything you need to know.

The basics: what exactly is HYROX? 

HYROX — a portmanteau of “hybrid” and “rocks” — bills itself as the World Series of Fitness Racing. It combines running with functional strength training, thereby bridging the gap between conventional endurance sports and gym-based fitness. The format is surprisingly simple. Each race consists of a 1 km run followed by a different exercise station, repeated eight times: ski erg (1,000 m), sled push (50 m), sled pull (50 m), burpee broad jumps (80 m), rowing (1,000 m), farmer’s carry (200 m), sandbag lunges (100 m), and wall balls (100 repetitions). An average HYROX race lasts about 60 to 90 minutes. It is a tough but achievable format — and that balance is a large part of the reason why it has become so popular.

Where does it come from? 

HYROX was founded in 2017 by co-founder and CEO Christian Toetzke, an endurance sports enthusiast, together with Moritz Fürste, former German Olympic hockey champion. The first event took place in Hamburg. The vision: the intensity and community of CrossFit, but with a standardized format where everyone worldwide can compare results. That first event had only 650 participants. Since then, there has been no looking back.

How big has it become? 

The figures are impressive. The sport has experienced a 1,000% growth in global participation over the span of five years. What started with 650 participants in 2017 has grown to over 650,000 participants worldwide by 2024 — many events sell out within hours and some even use a lottery system to manage demand. The 2025/26 season features more than 100 races — an increase of at least 20% compared to last season. Co-founder Moritz Fürste has indicated that they are counting on approximately 1.5 million tickets sold for this season.

Who is it for?

For everyone — truly. With 10 divisions based on weight, repetition schemes, and age categories, HYROX is competitive for elite athletes yet accessible to beginners. The four main categories are:

  • Open — focused on completion; HYROX claims that 99% of participants reach the finish line
  • Pro — with heavier weights for more experienced athletes
  • Doubles — in pairs, where partners take turns completing the events
  • Relay — teams of four dividing the stations among themselves

There is also a growing Adaptive division for para-athletes. 

Why is everyone so enthusiastic about it?

The standardized format means that your time in Amsterdam is directly comparable to someone racing in Tokyo or New York — giving every participant a real sense of global competition. HYROX is also designed to go viral: DJs at the events, a strong sharing culture, and patches instead of medals meant to be worn on your gym bag. It is simultaneously a race, a community, and a training goal — and that combination is hard to match. 

Nutrition & supplements: what should you keep in mind?

HYROX places hybrid demands on your body: roughly 8–10 km of running combined with heavy functional work. Your nutrition and supplement strategy must therefore support both endurance and strength sports. These are the key points to consider:

  • Carbohydrates — Your primary fuel on race day. Do not arrive at the start exhausted. A carbohydrate-rich meal the evening before and a light carbohydrate source 90 minutes before the race is the standard approach for most athletes.
  • Createtin — Supports strength training, can offer benefits during the repeated power peaks of functional fitness, and aids in recovery. One of the best-supported supplements for HYROX-type loads — incorporate it into your daily routine well before the race.
  • Caffeine — Reduces perceived exertion, improves mental alertness, and can extend the time to fatigue.
  • Electrolytes — You lose sodium and potassium during 60–90 minutes of continuous exertion. Do not rely solely on water, especially in warmer venues. Beta-alanine — Worth considering for high-intensity events such as sled push and wall balls. It has shown measurable improvements in time trial performance among endurance athletes, and the repeated anaerobic peaks in HYROX fit that profile well.
  • Vitamin D & Iron — Often overlooked, but crucial for sustained energy and performance. Both are common deficiencies, especially after the winter, and both have more impact on your race than most fancy supplements.
